HMRC have decided to have a go at another trade, this time it is plumbers. They have gained access to the Gas Safe register and are using data gathered from there to target plumbers. In associuation with this they are offering a tax amnesty, going back up to 5 years, whereby any under-declared income will have a reduced penalty of between 10% or 20% depending on whether HMRC believe the errors/omissions were careless or deliberate.

The deadline for declarations under this scheme is 31 May.

However, it has been intimated that other trades may be able to make a declaration under this amnesty and certainly that HMRC are likely to attack other trades using their professional associations, for example, double glazing contractors. We will keep you posted.
